St Ives Penzance shares the best family friendly days out in Cornwall
Whether you’re here on holiday or you call it home, Cornwall is a great place to spend time with your family. It has lots of exciting things to do for kids of all ages, no matter the weather. We’re sharing our favourite family friendly days out, but there’s plenty more that Cornwall has to offer.
The Eden Project is a great all weather, family friendly day out. On sunny days, you can spend time exploring the beautiful landscaped gardens with a variety of exotic and sub-tropical plants and the Rainforest and Mediterranean biomes provide hours of fun, whatever the weather. February 2nd sees the opening of Eden’s newest permanent exhibition, Invisible Worlds; Ocean, with a stunning audio and visual display in the Core.
One of our favourite family friendly beaches is Marazion beach near Penzance. There’s everything you need and more for a family day out with a shallow, safe water with no surf, a small ankle deep river, lots of rock pools and views of the stunning St Michael’s Mount. For the energetic amongst you why not take the flat 3 miles walk along the coastal path from Penzance, or at low tide head along the causeway to the mount. The beach itself has all the facilities you may need with seasonal lifeguard cover, nearby toilets, and easy access from a large nearby carpark. The beach is also only a minute’s walk from the village, which has great selection of cafés and restaurants, in case you don’t fancy packing a picnic.
Tehidy Woods, Camborne
If the beach isn’t your thing, why not head for a woodland walk at Tehidy Woods? There’s numerous different walking trails suitable for all fitness levels and a variety of local wildlife for children to enjoy, including some very friendly squirrels. With 250 acres of woodland and a lovely picnic area, you can pack a lunch and spend the whole afternoon enjoying nature. Parking is plentiful and there are toilet facilities and a café on site.
Paradise Park, a wildlife sanctuary just outside of Hayle, is another popular all-weather attraction. They have over 130 different species including red pandas, penguins, otters, and over 1,000 birds. On very rainy days why not head into the JungleBarn, an on-site indoor soft play centre suitable for all ages. There’s giant slides for older children and a dedicated area for toddlers.
Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Gweek
A day out at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary is a great way for children to learn the ins and outs of animal rescue whilst getting to the meet seals, sea lions, otters and penguins. Visitors will get to explore behind the scenes at the heart in Cornwall’s only working Seal Hospital as well as seeing them carry out life-saving work with the residents. The expansive, 42-acre site also boasts a woodland quiz trail, café with undercover seating and two gift shops.
Jubilee Pool in Penzance is an iconic art deco lido that provides safe, outdoor swimming and family fun with all the convenience and facilities you’d expect. Currently they are developing a new section of the pool that will be heated to 38°C by geothermal energy. They are also expanding the café and creating indoor space for community activities. Not only will Jubilee Pool be a popular summer day out, but it will also be an all year round, all weather attraction in Penzance. Work is set to be complete in spring and the pool is due to reopen in May 2019.
Newquay Zoo, Newquay
Newquay Zoo is home to over 1,000 of the world’s rarest and most endangered animals. Set on a 13 acre site of lush tropical gardens, just a short walk from Newquay town, the zoo is one of Cornwall’s busiest attractions. With everything from lions, wildebeests, monkeys and zebras, as well as activity trails, face painting, a children’s play area, a Woodland Walk and Dragon maze, there’s something to keep children of all ages occupied.
