When you first come to Penzance shopping may not be at the forefront of your mind. However, hidden in the busy, lively streets of Penzance are some beautiful shops selling quality local products. There’s plenty to choose from if you know where to look, but here are just a few of our more recent discoveries.
This gorgeously curated homeware and accessories shop sits on the higher end of the historic Chapel Street, one of the towns more quaint and architecturally pleasing streets. With a clean, fresh and modern decor and a great selection of quality pieces it’s easy to see the care and attention to detail that’s gone into creating and stocking No.56. As well as homeware, they also stock clothing, stationary, indoor planters and garden accessories. There’s a large enough selection to enjoy browsing without being overwhelming, and with friendly, attentive service it’s fast becoming a favourite amongst locals.
Hobbs The Kitchen Shop
Sitting on the top of Causeway head, Hobbs The Kitchen Shop is a small, independent kitchen store stocking a wide selection of cookware and bakeware. Hobbs first opened in 1994 and they’re still going strong twenty-one years later. They have great customer service and the staff are all keen cooks, so love nothing better than swapping recipes and chatting about how to get the best from your cookware.
The Edge of the World Bookshop
You’ll find The Edge of the World Bookshop on Market Jew Street right in the heart of Penzance. They have a fantastic range of books as well as a beautiful range of stationery and cards. Their knowledgeable and friendly staff are on-hand to advise and inspire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
In February 2015 Cornwall-based artist, Mat McIvor, and local entrepreneur, Izzy Phillips, took the reins of Fishboy PZ, a Cornish clothing company that has been designing and screen-printing clothing since 2001. Another Chapel Street offering, Fishboy Pz takes inspiration from the Cornish landscape and traditions of farming, mining and fishing whilst enlisting talented and local creative minds. This contemporary clothing store combines great service, local design and quality products.
Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange are contemporary art galleries in Newlyn and Penzance, with year-round exhibitions and events showcasing big names and local talent. The Exchange sits hidden between Market Jew Street and Chapel Street and houses a beautiful gift shop with a unique selection of ceramics, jewellery, gifts, books and cards. Not only do they have an exquisite hand-selected range of stock and award winning architecture but all proceeds go directly to supporting their exhibition and education activities.
